Are Face Shields Better Than Masks for Coronavirus Protection?

AARP Healthy Living discusses the advantages of wearing face shields. Face masks are hot, inhibit facial communication and make it harder fro some to breathe. Alternatively face shields are very effective at infection prevention for those living their daily lives (in non high risk medical settings). Because face shields cover the eyes, they are protecting the mucus membranes where potential infection could arise. Additionally, face shields are easier to wear resulting in less adjusting or touching them - meaning less contact with your face. Eli Perencevich, M.D., a professor of internal medicine and epidemiology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine states: “face shields appear to significantly reduce the amount of inhalation exposure to influenza virus, another droplet-spread respiratory virus. In a simulation study, face shields were shown to reduce immediate viral exposure by 96 percent when worn by a simulated health care worker within 18 inches of a cough.”
